As a history buff, I love places that have a great story to tell. Unfortunately for our stay, the story I have to tell about this “hotel” is not a good one. This place is rich in history but its current state is pitiful…from the outside to the inside is just terrible. The lawn had not been mowed in who knows when. Then I understand they were going through renovations, but why would you put people in areas or rooms that needed work? I cannot explain the condition of this hotel other than find something else; maybe your car?! Our 18 month old almost stuck her finger in one of the outlets that were not correctly covered. If you are into “The Shining”, this is your place. It’s a shame that a place that is registered with the National Historical Commission is in this state of disrepair. The one shining spot of the hotel was its staff, but that’s it. Sorry Hotel Luther…. You need to get it together and SOON!
This review is focused on the hotel itself. Not Palacios the city. That will be in another review. The staff were friendly. While Im sorry i cant recall the ladies name that checked us in. She was professional, respectful very kind. I had no issues with the level of service. The outside needed to be repainted. Plain and simple. When first arriving and seeing the whole building my fiancé immediately mumbled haunted. So, she was apprehensive the whole time. I nor her experienced any sort of activity. Zero. The room was decent. Bed decent. But caused a lot of tossing and turning so sleep was rough. No ceiling fan. Cold shower one night no matter how long we left the hot water side on. If your over 54 the shower head will be to low. Amana Window unit for ac. The tv was mounted on the wall but the batteries was not good on the tv remote and i had to push the buttons at the tv. Roku was set up. However, the internet connection was irritatingly spotty. If you have kids and they need wind down and internet does that for them. Then your out of luck.I will leave you with this. It feels like you going to grannys home but with a funeral home feel.I had no issues with guest noise, no issue with service. I suppose its a hard balance when ownership does not have a lot of money to spend to bring this ol girl back to her glory. We well go back and stay but get one with a kitchenette as it seems easier to cook for ourselves than depend on the restaurants.
The Luther Hotel has an amazing history as well as a long list of famous visitors. Mrs. Baker, the lady who currently runs the hotel, is sweet as can be. Each room has its own feel to it. We have stayed there twice and visited many times, each was a great experience. There really is nothing like sitting in one of the rocking chairs on the front porch and watching the waves.
Hotel is in very poor condition. Despite being a historical building the staff are poorly trained and equipped to manage a proper hotel. Rooms are musty, sheets and towels are stained and torn. The building has numerous electrical issues and doors and windows don’t work, close or secure properly. Would do everything possible to never stay there again. Sleeping in a vehicle would be a better option.
Not what was expected at all, I understand the hotel was under renovations, but this is something straight out of a horror movie rooms not in proper working condition. Parts of flooring opened up, electrical, plumbing issues. Vintage, Yes. But to the point where it should be closed until complete. Like Fully complete and maybe just maybe I’d give a chance at staying here. I called almost 3 months in advance to book rooms and one was lost and the other was not the proper room originally booked. Sad and I hate having to write a negative review on places but it’s just not suitable to stay in especially if you have a family with little ones. Just not a comfortable feeling at all.
Understand that this hotel is in repair from winter storm and in some cases, Harvey. If you are looking for an upscale place, you will find those in the surrounding hotels near Palacios. The hotel will take you way back in time. Something youd experience in the Mayberry days of Andy Griffith. I kid you not. It is a charming hotel. Creaky floors, original doors, windows above the doors, very charming! Ms. Chellette Baker manages the property. Precious lady! What to expect at your stay. If your room comes with a full kitchen, understand that it comes with micro, small refrigerator, small coffee pot, but NO STOVE. They have all the utensils, including cooking pans, etc, but no stove. Bring an electric skillet if you plan to do some cooking. Bring a 3 ponged adapter for two ponged since outlets are for two if you plan to use surge protector on wall. When you plan to shower, turn water on and allow to run 15 minutes for hot water to reach your unit. There was great damage to hot water heaters due to ice storm. Repairs are slow, but theyre doing their best. Water pressure in shower is slow. What you can expect is a very relaxed experience in the lobby or front porch getting to know the other guests. After two nights, I felt like Id known them for years! Internet connection is fine, TV channels/cable is fine. Room was very, very clean and one of the most comfortable beds Ive slept in. Great getaway for single, couple and families alike. Lots of great fishing just walking distance. Most of the restaurants in Palacios are closed on Sundays. If your agenda includes a Sunday, plan to either prepare meals in the room or there is a DQ, Sonic, Simple Simon Pizza (excellent pizza) and Subway available. Restaurants to try are Trans, Palacios Mexican Restaurant, The Point, and Dannys Seafood (One of my favorites). Check Google to restaurant hours. Some will close during major holidays, so plan ahead.
My daughter and I resently stayed at the Luther Hotel for 2 nights. We had an awesome time resting and relaxing. The view is breath taking. The staff is wonderful and the rooms are extremely clean. The hotel is packed with so much history, I will have to go back several times to even scratch the surface.
This historic hotel is a gem on the gulf coast. The rooms are very unique. Ours had a small living space with a pull out bed, kitchen, and separate bedroom. Jack makes every guest feel wholly welcomed. You get a sense of love and history the moment you walk in the door.
The place needs some work. The owner is on his own trying to fix the place up after Harvey. Its a historical hotel. I did sleep very well. The pillows are great & I normally dont sleep well lol. But the other guest & the owner were all awesome. One of the nicest people you will ever meet.
We recently went to Palacios for the first time and had such a wonderful time. The Luther is an absolute historic gem of a hotel. Keep historic in mind when booking, because if you need shiny and new, this wont be the place for you. If you want wonderful stories, a bit of quirky charm, a warm and friendly staff, all in a really cool old hotel just steps from the water then this is your place. I met so many people who stay regularly at The Luther it almost seems like their extended family. So cool! We absolutely cant wait to go back!
It was a blast spending the night at the Luther hotel. Its like youre going back in time and the history about this hotel is phenomenal. Although the place is historical the bed was extremely comfortable. Too bad the weather wouldnt allow us having a glass of wine at the porch in front of the hotel and enjoying the sunset and the beautiful view over the bay. Thanks Jack for telling us all those wonderful stories, and showing us the Presidential suite in the top of the hotel. Well be back soon for sure. Olinda & John.
A historic beach front place where 3 presidents and 14 super type stars have stayed since 1935 including Roosevelt and Pres. JOHNSON. A HIDDEN GEM .IT IS OLD SCHOOL .each room different.Presidents Suite actually has A T.V (black and white)No elevators but that is why it is so unique and wonderful
This place is extraordinary has alot of history as i walked in it was like visiting the past .Staff is extremely friendly the rooms are unique.Every room is different .Im in town visiting my wife that works out here in Port Comfort. I will definitely stay here again . Across the road is plenty of space to fish off dock or in a boat i love it out here .
It is amazing that this, the oldest pine building in Texas is still standing after 115 years. I love it partly because it is a one minute walk to one of the best fishing piers on the Texas coast. It has a great front porch and lawn with a nice view of the bay. We plan on returning frequently to fish and relax.
Have you ever walked into a place and just felt like you belonged? That’s how I felt at the Luther. It felt like home, it had an old world charm that made it seem like it was paused in time. The beauty of it was not lost on me and it is perfect for families. You look out the front door and there is a park, pier, and the beach right across the street. Prefect just doesn’t seem like the right word. It was like home.
We had an Amazing time, took my grandchildren to the Halloween carnival and Haunted house, love the Hotel I can just imagine how it was back in the day, Jack is the most nicest person we met, he told us the history of the hotel, my grandchildren Loved him, it was my first time here and am already planning my next trip, Everybody here in Palacios make you feel so welcomed!!!!💖💖
This hidden jewel is my go to place to escape the frenzy of Houston and simply be simple. Jack Findley and Diedra will absolutely ensure that you are well taken care of and the ghosts of LBJ, Shirley Temple, Rita Heyworth, and the thousands of guests who have enjoyed the charm and beauty of the Tres Palacios Bay grace the Halls of this Southern gem

2022-06-12I came to Palacios for my best friends wedding. Booked a 4 day stay and upon arrival at the airport had some issues with my car rental. I ended up spending an extra 500 to get a vehicle. My friend stopped to pay for my room since I was going to have a later arrival. And after explaining the situation, the front desk dropped my room price! I was shocked. It absolutely wasnt necessary, but definitely sweet. Upon arrival, yes, a lot of people have complained the building needs work. And repainted. But I actually like the charm of it. Its over a hundred years old and being restored. You cant expect it to be like a Wyndham. My room is nice and cool, has a beautiful beach theme and I love that they are redoing the original floors. The front desk person is also very very sweet. She shared some of the history with me and was just a joy to talk to..they are working really hard to restore this place. It hasnt been easy with the pandemic and hurricanes. I will definitely be looking forward to seeing the progress when I return to Palacios ❤️

2022-06-12My time was good but I was going downstairs while shooting a video and caught a ghost in the window but that wasn’t the scariest part the ghost pulled off my sheets and my younger brother kept pointing to the dark hallway and saying there was a monster he did this multiple times

2022-07-01Its old but still standing and trying hard to just survive. Lots of history worth a visit if not to just sit on the front porch and look at the great view out to sea.

2021-07-31This weekend was our first time staying at Luther Hotel and we loved it! Every person we encountered was friendly and they treated each other like family. It was lovely meeting the lady who runs it, Ms. Baker and hearing her tell us about the hotels history. The suite we stayed in was plenty big for four growing kids and family friend. It had everything we needed and was clean. We met the lady in charge of housekeeping and you can clearly tell that she is passionate about the Hotel and making rooms comfortable for customers.

2021-07-22The hotel itself is lovely, their employees, otherwise. Starting in March or April of this year I began looking for somewhere to stay while my house was being built (1-3 months) I spoke to people on several different occasions, including a man who may have been the manager (John, maybe?) And were more than happy to accommodate me. I explained that I didnt have a date, but had hoped to make a reservation in July or August. A young man even showed me a few rooms on one occasion.Fast forward to July, I have two weeks notice to find somewhere to live and I made my reservation. Today, a woman claiming to be the manager called me and told me they could not accommodate me. I have a degree in business and have worked at customer service jobs my entire working life. Her reasons , though they were valid, her attitude was awful.Imagine my surprise, after having planned this for several months now, to not being accommodated? I have 2 weeks to find somewhere to myself and my three children to live.Heres the problem: The woman told me they dont do it because of fire risk, due to cooking. This is both quite understandable and valid. What is not understandable, nor valid, was her sharing that they only accommodate certain (tax free = state employees) workers and people from the plant. This is bad customer service, a customer should not be privy to such information.Next, I told her I was shocked, because I had spoken to different people several months ago including a man named Daniel, to which she replied, well, you didnt talk to me, and Daniel is just a guy that volunteers here sometimes. This is horrible customer service. I talked to a tall middle aged man who I remember distinctly saying he was the owner, or perhaps son of the owner. Secondly, perhaps most importantly, she just told a potential customer and stranger than a man who worked the front desk had no idea what he was talking about. Right away, it created doubts in my mind. A front desk worker cannot be trusted to conduct business, but can be trusted with sensitive information?Such a beautiful and historical hotel should, if not make an effort to employ efficient people then at the very least educate, inform and train all people who represent the Luther hotel / brand. This could (and should) have been handled much better. Im saddened disappointed in the lack of organization in the customer service. Its worth restating, I completely understand and support their reasoning. But this was not handled well; I spoke to different people on at least two occasions, in person, and its highly disappointing that neither could have conveyed this information to me. Now, I am left scrambling to find temporary housing and far worse, with a very bad taste of the Luthers business model (or lack thereof) in my mouth. I would hope that it does better in the future.

2021-10-24This hotel is currently under renovation but despite it all, it is definitely a historical piece of beauty. The place as slowly coming alive again. Thank you to the welcoming staff for your kindness. We truly intend to revisit again.

2021-08-16I dont know how anyone stays anywhere else! Surprisingly fast WiFi and a vintage setting that is becoming more and more difficult to find. Anywhere! You can feel the years of love from different people who have added to the place. If you want to know about the city and surrounding area, just spend five minutes on the porch. Youll hear the best tips from the awesome people who work here and other travelers who stay here. The rooms are more like a small house, not saying theyre massive, but tall ceilings with a kitchen and dining area, and the view from the porch is out of this world. Ill definitely be back!

2022-01-21Our visit was an all-around excellent experience. We will definitely stay at the Luther Hotel again in the future.
